Two Checks at Foxchase
After lunch at Foxchase Golf Club on September 18, two oversized checks came out. One was made out to Adamstown Fire Company and the other to Susquehanna Church of Christ, and both organizations had people there to accept them.
Our annual Customer Appreciation Golf Outing brings together customers, vendors, and friends of GSM Roofing and GSM Industrial in Stevens, PA. It’s also where we announce the Great Roof Giveaway winners and raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association, and this year we added a gift in memory of one of our own.
Two Great Roof Giveaway Winners
The Great Roof Giveaway is in its 14th year, and this year it has two recipients. The Gooding Group Foundation awarded each $5,000 toward roof repairs, which GSM Roofing will complete. Both projects came in under the award amount, so each organization keeps the difference for its own work.
Both repairs focus on flashing. Flashing is the material that seals the joints in a roof, around anything that comes through it and along the edges where it meets a wall or gutter. Those joints are some of the most common places for water to get in.
Adamstown Fire Company
Adamstown Fire Company has been protecting Adamstown since 1874. It’s an all-volunteer department covering Adamstown Borough and parts of Brecknock and East Cocalico Townships, and its members respond from home or work at any hour, every day of the year. Adamstown was also a 2018 Great Roof Giveaway recipient, and we’re glad to be working with them again.
We’ll install new EPDM flashings around the heat stacks and a lower roof HVAC unit, add new strip flashing along the gutter edge of both the upper and lower roofs, and reseal the wall flashing where the two roofs meet.
Susquehanna Church of Christ
Susquehanna Church of Christ meets on Apple Avenue in Marietta for Sunday worship and Bible classes. The church’s leaks are coming from its low slope roof.
We’ll replace about 60 feet of worn edging with new white aluminum edging and about 40 feet of counter flashing, and add a termination bar to secure the top of the existing flashing.
Supporting the Fight Against Alzheimer’s
This year’s outing raised $2,800 for the Alzheimer’s Association, and the Gooding Group Foundation is adding $10,000.
Alzheimer’s disease is part of the Gooding family’s story. We lost Mary Gooding in 2011, and last year we lost John Gooding, GSM’s second-generation owner, to dementia. Raising money for the Alzheimer’s Association has been part of this outing ever since.

A Gift in Memory of Dave Hoffer
In June, we lost Dave Hoffer. Dave served GSM in many roles over his career, most recently as our Steep-Slope Foreman, and he was an NRCA Master Pro Certified Installer. His work is on some of the most recognizable roofs we’ve completed, including the synthetic slate mansard at the Nittany Lion Inn at Penn State.
At the outing, the Gooding Group Foundation announced a $10,000 gift to Hospice & Community Care in Dave’s memory. His family asked that memorial gifts go there, and Hospice & Community Care cared for Dave at the end of his life.
