Experienced Slater: Slate & Shingle Installer, Ephrata, PA

Full-Time  |  $21–$30/hr (DOE, with flexibility above $30 for the right candidate)  |  Monday–Friday, 6 AM–3 PM  |  Overtime Available  |  Year-Round

GSM Roofing is hiring an experienced slater out of our Ephrata, Pennsylvania headquarters. We need someone who has cut, fit, and laid natural slate: someone who knows what proper head lap looks like, knows what silicone caulk on a slate joint actually means, and can match replacement slate by quarry, color blend, and weathering pattern on a roof that has been weathering for fifty years.

This is not an entry-level role. We are specifically looking for a slater with hands-on experience on natural slate, synthetic slate, or steep-pitch shingle systems, ideally with copper specialty metal experience as well. If you take pride in the craft, we want to talk to you.

The Work

You will install, repair, and restore natural slate, synthetic slate, and architectural shingle roofing systems on residential, commercial, institutional, and historic properties across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland.

GSM Roofing has been doing slate work since 1946 and contributed to the National Slate Association’s updated slate installation manual, the standard the rest of the industry follows. Our recent slate portfolio includes natural slate restoration at the home of President James Buchanan at Wheatland in Lancaster, the Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ, and the 2026 Vermont Gray restoration at St. Matthew Roman Catholic Church in Tyrone (a National Register property listed since 1993). Our synthetic slate work includes the Nittany Lion Inn at Penn State University, a 35,450-piece installation on a 17/12 pitch that demands the same craftsmanship as natural slate. Our specialty metals capability (copper snow guards, custom copper ridge caps, copper flashings, custom fabrication) is built in-house, not subcontracted out.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of slater experience do you need?

We are looking for hands-on experience installing or restoring natural slate, synthetic slate, or steep-pitch shingle roofing systems. Three or more years preferred. Familiarity with slate types (Vermont, Buckingham, North Country, Spanish, Welsh) and the ability to match slate on aged roofs is a strong plus. If you have done copper specialty work, that is a strong plus too.

Is this primarily slate work or shingle work?

The role covers both, with slate as the priority skill we are hiring for. The work mix varies by project pipeline and season: natural slate restoration on historic properties, synthetic slate installations, and architectural shingle work across PA, NJ, DE, and MD. If you are strong in slate and capable on shingle, we want to talk to you.

Do I need to be Master Pro Certified?

No. Master Pro Certification is a plus, not a requirement. Our lead slater is Master Pro Certified and contributed to the National Slate Association installation manual. GSM has additional Pro Certified specialists in service and EPDM as well. A pathway to slate-specific certification is available for the right person.

What kind of historic projects has GSM worked on?

Recent natural slate projects include the home of President James Buchanan at Wheatland in Lancaster, PA; the Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ; and the 2026 Vermont Gray slate restoration at St. Matthew Roman Catholic Church in Tyrone, a property listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1993. Our synthetic slate work includes the Nittany Lion Inn at Penn State University (35,450 pieces, 17/12 pitch). GSM contributed to the National Slate Association’s updated slate installation manual, the standard the rest of the industry follows.

What is the pay range?

$21–$30 per hour, depending on experience, certifications, and demonstrated skill, with flexibility above $30 for an exceptional candidate. Overtime is available. Pay is reviewed annually.

What hours and where do you work?

Monday through Friday, 6 AM to 3 PM, with overtime available and frequently offered during peak season. Year-round full-time work. You will run out of our Ephrata, PA office on projects across Pennsylvania, with occasional work in New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland. Most sites are within a one to two hour drive. Overnight travel is rare and always paid.

Do I need my own tools?

GSM provides $500 in tools and gear at hire, with additional tool credits after 60 days. Specialty equipment (slate cutters, hooks, hammers, ridge benders, scaffolding, fall protection) is provided by GSM.
